Life is Like  A Harp String

Life is Like a Harp String is a series of four wall-based sculptural works on paper that explore the delicate balance between control and release, sound and silence, order and distortion. Each piece holds a single sheet of paper within a Perspex box, the surface tensioned by threads that warp and pull against their boundaries.

The paper curves forward under this internal pressure, distorting the grid drawn or stitched across its surface. These subtle movements create a rhythm that travels from one work to the next, forming a sequence that reads almost musically. Together they generate a resonance that shifts in tone and intensity as the viewer moves along the line.

The title draws on a Buddhist poem that reminds us life, like a harp string, must be tuned with care. If the string is too loose, it cannot sound. If it is too tight, it will break. Within these works, that same balance is made visible. The controlled geometry of the lines meets the organic curve of the bowed paper, revealing how stability is always negotiated rather than fixed. The Perspex boxes act both as containers and amplifiers. They hold each work in a state of tension, preserving the trace of pressure while heightening its clarity.

Across the series, rhythm replaces image. Each piece is a variation on a theme, a single note tuned differently, finding its own point of equilibrium. Together they form a kind of melodic heartbeat, where material, structure, and resonance converge in a shared moment of balance.
